Finding a good challenge helps motivate me, and do I need motivating right now, I’ve decided to do the above instagram challenge until the end of January.
It’s all about going beyond a flat picture of your artwork.
Day one is all about your favourite painting. You could interpret that as you will. I chose to pick my favourite painting from before Christmas, ‘Portrait 4’.


I just love it. The pose in the original reference photo is interesting. Who’s she looking at? I got the skin colour pretty accurate and she’s the first black person I believe I’ve ever painted. I think she goes well with the pink background.
The hair could have done with a bit more finesse but I felt leaving it more suggested would work better than really fiddly detail that looked false.
She’s probably my most successful painting, apart from ‘Portrait 10’, below, where I feel I got the values more right than usual:

So, tomorrow’s topic for the challenge is something I’ve learned. Keep a look out for it in the morning!
